Use the interpreter feature (Beta)

By using the mocoVoice interpreter feature, you can interpret face-to-face and online conversations in real time and display them as text on the screen. You can use it when you need to communicate on the spot, such as during brief visitor reception or online meetings with overseas bases.

Important

The interpreter feature is in beta (β)

  • You can use it for free during the beta period.
  • Operation may become unstable. We do not recommend using it in important business negotiations or contract meetings.
  • Specifications and screens are subject to change without notice.
  • Please send your opinions and requests via Contact.

Before using: Enable the beta feature

Because the interpreter feature is a beta feature, you must first enable it on the “About you” settings screen.

  1. Click the person icon (About you) in the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Scroll to Beta features near the bottom of the settings screen.
  3. Turn ON the switch for Use interpreter (Beta) feature.

When you turn the switch ON, Interpreter (Beta) appears in the left sidebar.

Note

The ON/OFF state of the beta feature is saved for each device and browser. If you use another device, enable it there using the same steps.

Choose the interpreter mode

When you click Interpreter (Beta) in the left sidebar, the mode selection screen appears first. There are two modes, which differ in purpose and whether recording is possible.

ModeMain purposeRecording
Interpret on one deviceVisitor reception/Customer service〇 Supported
Interpret on individual devicesOnline meetings/Large room meetings× Not supported

Check the sections below for detailed instructions on how to use each mode.

  • Interpret on one device: Use this when two people talk around one computer. It picks up your voice and the other person’s voice with the microphone and interprets them.
  • Interpret on individual devices: Use this for online meetings, meetings in large rooms, or conversations with someone sitting far away. The host creates a room ID to share, and everyone joins from their own device.
Note

Currently, you can only record in “Interpret on one device” “Interpret on individual devices” does not support recording at this time (we plan to support it in a future update). If you need to keep a record of the conversation, please secure a separate recording method.

Supported languages

The interpreter feature currently supports the following 13 languages. You can choose any combination of “Your language” and “Their language” from this list.

  • Japanese
  • English
  • Korean
  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Chinese (Cantonese)
  • French
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • Indonesian
  • Vietnamese
  • Thai
  • Malay
Note

Supported languages may be added or adjusted in future updates. If you have requests to add new languages, please let us know via Contact.

Use “Interpret on one device”

This mode uses one device to pick up your voice and the other person’s voice via the microphone and interprets them. The audio is recorded at the same time as interpretation, so you can save it as a transcript after you finish.

1. Choose the mode

On the interpreter mode selection screen, select Interpret on one device and click Next.

2. Set languages

  • Their language: Select the language the other person speaks.
  • Your language: Select the language you speak.

If you want to use a dictionary, select the dictionary you want to use from the dictionary selection field. To see how to create a dictionary, check Create and edit dictionaries.

3. Choose the audio input

In Audio input, choose the audio to use for interpretation.

  • Microphone: Select this to pick up audio with the device microphone, such as for face-to-face conversations.
  • Screen sharing: Select this to use the audio from a shared tab, window, or entire screen, such as for online meetings.
  • Microphone and screen sharing: Select this to pick up your voice with the microphone while also capturing the other person’s voice from an online meeting.

If you use screen sharing, select the sharing target after you start the interpretation. For a tab, turn on Also share tab audio. For a window or the entire screen, turn on Also share system audio.

Note

In environments that do not support system audio sharing for windows or the entire screen, select the browser tab to share audio from. Check Record in the browser for supported environments.

4. Start interpreting

Depending on your audio input, click Start interpreting, Start interpreting with screen sharing, or Start interpreting with microphone and screen sharing. Recording starts automatically, and the interpreter screen appears.

Note

When using a microphone, you must allow microphone access. The first time, your browser will show a message asking “Allow use of your microphone?”. Click Allow.

5. Talk on the interpreter screen

When you talk using the selected audio input, what you say and the interpretation appear on the screen in order. From Settings in the top right, you can change the text size, display language, and shortcut keys.

6. Finish

When the conversation is over, click Stop recording and leave in the top right. The recording stops, and the interpreter screen closes.

After finishing: Load the recorded audio

In “Interpret on one device”, the audio is saved to the server when you finish. If you want to transcribe it right away, follow these steps on the transcription screen.

Note

*To do this, the team administrator must first enable browser recording. For details, check Record in the browser.

  1. Turn ON the Record in browser switch on the transcription screen.
  2. Click Select from past recordings to see the list of audio recorded during interpretations.
  3. Select the audio you want to use to start the transcription right away.

Use “Interpret on individual devices”

This mode shares the interpreter feature for online meetings, meetings in large rooms, or with someone sitting far away. The host creates a new room, and participants use the room ID to join.

Note

Currently, no recording occurs in this mode (we plan to support it in a future update). If you need a record of the conversation, please secure a separate recording method, such as a web conferencing tool’s recording feature or another IC recorder.

Host: Create a new room

1. Choose the mode

On the interpreter mode selection screen, select Interpret on individual devices and click Next.

2. Choose your language and select create new

  • Your language: Select the language you speak.
  • Room ID: Select Create new.

3. Start interpreting

If you use a dictionary, select the dictionary and click Start interpreting.

4. Share the room ID with participants

The room ID appears in the top right of the interpreter screen. Click the copy icon next to the room ID to copy it, and share it with participants via email or chat.

Participant: Join an existing room

1. Choose the mode

On the interpreter mode selection screen, select Interpret on individual devices and click Next.

2. Choose your language and select join room

  • Your language: Select the language you speak. The display will be translated into your language.
  • Room ID: Select Join room and enter the room ID shared by the host.

3. Join the room

Click Start interpreting. When you join the room, you share the same screen as other participants, and you can read the conversation in your language.

Note

The translation appears for each participant who joins the room, matching the language they chose. For example, even if three people choose Japanese, English, and Chinese respectively, the content appears in their own language on their own screens.

Finish

When the conversation is over, click Leave in the top right. Even if the host leaves, the room itself remains. If you converse with the same members again, the host can rejoin from “Past rooms” using the same room ID.

Useful features on the interpreter screen

From Settings in the top right of the interpreter screen, you can change the following.

  • Text size: Adjust in 5 levels.
  • Display language (Interpret on individual devices): Switch between “Both”, “Their language”, and “Only your language”.
  • Auto-scroll: Automatically scroll down the screen for new speech.
  • Shortcut keys: Press the space key to mute/unmute or switch the interpretation direction.

If you cannot interpret properly

  • If the microphone does not respond, check if your OS or browser microphone permission is ON.
  • If the interpretation seems to stop halfway, check if a reconnect message appears in the top right.
  • If you cannot join in “Interpret on individual devices”, check if the room ID is spelled correctly or if the host has deleted the room.
  • If that does not solve the issue, please contact us via Contact.

Viewing interpreter history

Below the interpreter top screen (interpreter mode selection screen), a list of rooms you created or joined in the past appears as Past rooms.

Currently, you can only perform the following actions from this list.

  • Select a room from “Interpret on individual devices” and rejoin with the same room ID (you can continue the conversation, but past exchanges will not reappear).
  • Delete unneeded rooms.

Currently, we do not support viewing past interpreted content (transcripts or translation results of exchanges). In a future update, we plan to add a feature to open and check past interpreted content later.

For “Interpret on one device”, since the audio recorded at the end is saved on the transcription side, you can always check the content in the form of a transcript or meeting notes using the steps above.
